Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - While we won't be enjoying the 50 degree temperatures we were earlier during the holiday week, relatively tame weather will continue as we close out December and 2023 to ring in the new year.
In fact, as the final statistics for December 2023 roll in across the United States, one thing has become clear -- the month will go down as one of the warmest Decembers ever for a number of locations, AccuWeather meteorologists say.
Nearly every reporting site over the lower 48 states experienced temperatures above the historical average for the month, which is quite rare. Typically, there are warm pockets and cool pockets due to fluctuations in the jet stream.
"Arctic air has been on the move this month, but mainly on the other side of the globe, in Siberia," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.
National Weather Service forecasters in Buffalo say the weather will begin to feel more seasonable this weekend, but any snow that results will be negligible and not impact any weekend or New Year's Eve events.
A cold front will cross the region today generating rain and snow showers, NWS forecasters say. Most areas will receive nothing more than a coating of snow on grassy surfaces. Weak low pressure will then bring another chance for some snow showers with only light accumulations Sunday and Sunday night.
