Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A driving ban is in place for much of Erie County as lake effect snow tightens its grip on county highways. The county adjusted a county-wide ban to an advisory for the northern portions of the county Friday morning, based on conditions. The ban remains for the central and southern portions of the county.

A travel advisory had previously been posted by Gov. Kathy Hochul and a commercial driving ban is in place along the NYS Thruway from Rochester to the Pennsylvania line. A driving ban and state of emergency is in place in the city of Buffalo.

A narrow and intense band of lake effect snow will dog the center portion of Erie County early Friday and continue through the day. "That should set up very close to the city or South Buffalo out to the airport or just south of the airport," National Weather Service meteorologist John Hitchcock told WBEN. "That's where it's going to remain all through the day tomorrow through tomorrow evening."

The heaviest snow is expected to target a line from South Buffalo and Lackawanna out through Lancaster, northern parts of West Seneca and southern parts of Cheektowaga. Forecasters are still confident the heaviest accumulations may be in the 3 to 4 feet range.
