April showers flood May flowers as a bleak week opens the month

"Starting off May on a very gloomy note."

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Those April showers may have scared off the May flowers.

And the chilly temperatures aren't helping much either.

"Starting off May on a very gloomy note," says WBEN 7 Meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski as we kickoff a week that will see damp and downright cold conditions.

National Weather Service forecasters blame a persistent storm system for the dank weather that will highlight the first week of May in Buffalo and Western New York. "This system will also produce some late season snow tonight and Tuesday night, especially across the higher terrain of the Southern Tier," forecasters say. The snow may even accumulate in spots across the southern tier Tuesday and into Wednesday.

Temperatures Monday will hover unseasonably cool in the 40's and additional showers will develop, possibly mixing with some snow across the higher elevations late Monday into Tuesday.

Tuesday will largely be a 'repeat' day and again unseasonably cold. "Chilly temperatures Tuesday across WNY will be 15 to 20 degrees below," NWS forecasters say.

When to look for improvement? Meteorologists seem confident the coming weekend will prove much more seasonable than what we just experienced.

"Notable improvement is not anticipated until Thursday night and Friday when the deep low shifts off the east coast," forecasters say.

The weekend is coming!
