Widespread rain, storms and gusty winds bring change to WNY weather

Widespread rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds will all blow into Western New York through the day Wednesday, bringing change from the springtime conditions.

Once the line of rain and storms arrives Wednesday morning, "We're going to have the storms on and off throughout the day," 7 Weather meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski tells WBEN.

While the system will impact the weather across much of the upper Great Lakes, the best coverage of rain and best chance of thunder will be across WNY, where a few brief downpours are likely, National Weather Service forecasters say.

The system will bring at least a chance of isolated, severe thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon and evening. There will be several rounds of thunderstorms Wednesday, but the severe weather risk will likely be limited to the last round of storms in the late afternoon and early evening and the most severe storms are more likely across the southern tier.

The showers and storms will diminish in coverage temporarily from late evening through the early overnight hours.

It will also become windy across the region, with gusty winds Wednesday through early Thursday, especially close to the lakes where gusts of 35 to 45 mph are expected.

With colder air arriving, a few snow showers will develop late Wednesday night through Thursday morning, forecasters say, but only a dusting is expected across the metro Buffalo area.

"We'll be in the upper 20's by tomorrow morning," Mentkowski tells WBEN.

Another weather system Friday into Friday night will bring snow, rain, and gusty winds to WNY.
