FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Residents who live near the PGA Championship have found a way to make money and help with parking at the same time.

WCBS 880's Sophia Hall found Maria sitting on a lawn chair at the bottom of her long driveway on Merritts Road, where she was directing drivers who need a place to park onto her two-and-a-half acre property in Farmingdale.

Maria and her husband, Tony, are charging $30 to $35 per car, per day so fans can go to the PGA.

"I need it because I'm an old man and I have to pay taxes," says Tony, who is 80 years old and pays $26,000 in taxes a year.

"We're making money," says Maria, who plans to buy something special her two grandchildren with the money.

On Tuesday, Maria and Tony had about 16 vehicles parked on their property. Many of the cars had out-of-state plates including Connecticut, New Jersey and even Georgia.

One man who was walking over to Bethpage Black after parking his car at Tony's.

"It's very convenient," he said, adding that it's comforting to know his car is safe. "Especially with Tony, he won't let anything happen to it."

One resident said some drivers wanted a flat fee for the week so he charged them $245.
