2 dead, 1 hurt after car hits wall, bursts into flames on FDR Drive

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Two people were killed and a third was injured in a fiery crash on the FDR Drive Friday morning.

An out-of-control Infiniti crashed into a retaining wall and burst into flames around 5 a.m. on the northbound side of the FDR near 72nd Street.

A 33-year-old man driving the car escaped but two female passengers were trapped and died, WCBS-TV reported.

The driver was hospitalized in serious but stable condition at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The victims have not been identified.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The crash wreaked havoc on traffic Friday morning. The northbound FDR was backed up into the low 20s, while southbound delays went all the way into the mid-130s on the Harlem River Drive.
