CORAM, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A community on Long Island has come together to save a popular Easter tradition that was nearly canceled after candy-filled eggs for the beloved event were stolen.
Photographer and graphic designer Philana Aiken, who owns Phenomenal Reflections in Coram, said sometime Monday night someone stole $40,000 worth of camera equipment along with thousands of candy and toy-filled eggs and 100 Easter baskets that were donated for a community Easter Egg Hunt being held this Saturday.
"I've been devastated through all of this," Aiken told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall on Thursday. "The Easter eggs were pre-filled with candy, toys, some of them even had money in it. We had over 5,000 eggs all filled."
"This is a family business so my children work with me as well," the mother of four added. "We were coming in daily filling eggs and the sponsors they brought their eggs already pre-filled so it was a lot of work that was already put into it."
Through social media and word of mouth, the community has come together to donate eggs for the hunt, along with prizes for the hundreds of children and teenagers who will participate in the free vent.
"I'm just more than grateful that everyone is willing to put out a helping hand to make this happen for these children," Aiken said.
Aiken has also set up a GoFundMe page to help replace the items that were stolen from her office, including cameras, lights, printers, photo sleeves, paper and ink.
Meanwhile, the Easter Egg Hunt will take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Granny Road Park in Medford.
