LEVITTOWN, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A Levittown man who, three years ago, murdered his wife in their bedroom, then attempted to kill her brother when he intervened, was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison on Thursday, according to the Nassau County District Attorney.

This sentencing follows a June trial, in which a jury found Thomas DiNapoli, 70, guilty of both second-degree murder of his wife Cheryl and attempted murder of his brother-in-law.

"Cheryl’s life was tragically cut short because of her husband’s murderous rage," said District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly.

The courts determined that on August 13, 2020, DiNapoli was arguing with his wife, 61, when he pulled out a 9mm rifle and fatally shot her in the neck and eye. Her younger brother, who was living in the house, rushed to the bedroom and wrestled the rifle away, authorities said.

In retaliation, Thomas took out a shotgun from a safe in his garage and shot his brother-in-law in the right arm. The brother-in-law was able to seize the shotgun on the front lawn before responding officers took Thomas away at approximately 11:50 p.m. that night.

"While no amount of prison time can ease the pain of the many family members and friends who loved [Cheryl] dearly, we hope that today’s lengthy sentence brings them some measure of comfort," Donnelly said.
