The meeting between the governor and the Manhattan DA came after Bragg faced intense criticism over some of the new policies that he implemented his first week in office.

Bragg was even criticized by fallen NYPD Officer Jason Rivera’s widow during her emotional eulogy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, in which she implied his policies created a dangerous environment for police.

Some called on Hochul to remove Bragg from office, but she has refused to do so.

On Tuesday, she spoke about the meeting for the first time publicly, telling reporters that Bragg has assured her he will keep dangerous criminals off New York City streets.

“He is taking the steps he needs to accomplish our shared vision to make sure that we ensure that this city is as safe as it can be,” Hochul said.

The bottom line, the governor said, is that Bragg needs to prosecute people who break the law, but she did say she's willing to give him some time.

“I cut him some slack,” she said. “He's only been on the job a quarter of the time that I have, and I've been on the job a short time.”

Hochul stressed that Bragg also understands the importance of his position.

“An individual who's been on the job literally weeks will have an opportunity to show the commitment to dealing with all levels of crimes, something that he was very much aware of was important,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bragg has admitted the messaging around his new policies may have been haphazard, but he stands behind the overall goal.
