NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Airline carriers have canceled all commercial flights scheduled for Monday at New York City's three major airports due to a major winter storm that's set to dump nearly two feet of snow across much of the region.
“As one might expect, the snow and very high wind gusts have severely affected flights at the airports," said Rick Cotton, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
By 3 p.m., all flights had been suspended at LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International and Newark-Liberty airports.
Earlier, Cotton said JFK Airport had to suspend all flights because of an electrical issue that arose due to the weather conditions.
At noon, Newark Airport still had four flights scheduled to depart, before those too were eventually canceled.
Travelers are urged to contact their airline for further information about rebooking.
De-icing and snow removal operations are underway to keep roadways and runways clear at the airports. However, AirTran service to and from area airports is either suspended or experiencing service delays.
As of 6:30 a.m. Monday, JFK had already logged nearly more than 3 inches of snow.
Conditions quickly worsened throughout the day Monday with heavy, wind-driven snow creating blizzard-like conditions. Local officials in New York and New Jersey have urged the public to stay off the roads.
