NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Eight public beaches in New York City opened Saturday for the summer, although unseasonably cold and rainy weather was putting a damper on holiday outings.
City officials said the eight beaches will remain open through Sunday, Sept. 12 and that lifeguards will be on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (swimming is prohibited at all other times).
The eight beaches include Orchard Beach in the Bronx; Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn; Rockaway Beach in Queens; and Midland Beach, South Beach, Cedar Grove Beach, and Wolfe's Pond Beach on Staten Island.
Face coverings will continue to be required in all Parks Department comfort stations and social distancing precautions should still be followed, officials said.
While beaches reopened for Memorial Day weekend, it was rainy and in the 50s in the city on Saturday, with more cold, wet weather expected Sunday. As a result, few people were seen at Coney Island Beach on Saturday morning.
On Long Island, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach was canceled Saturday because of “extremely poor weather conditions.” Sunday’s performance currently remains on schedule.
Anyone who purchased a parking pass for Saturday’s sold-out air show will be authorized to use their QR code for two free passes to enter any Long Island, New York state park throughout the summer, officials said.
