NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Police continue to search for a man wanted in connection with Saturday’s Times Square shooting amid reports that his brother had identified him to authorities.
The NYPD released surveillance video Saturday night of a man they described as a person of interest in the shooting.
The man’s brother later identified him to police and said he was the intended target of the shooting, according to WABC and WNBC.
Sources told the New York Post and the Daily News that the man being sought is a 31-year-old peddler of bootleg CDs who opened fire during an argument with his brother.
Police said gunfire erupted during a dispute between several men near W. 44th Street and Seventh Avenue just before 5 p.m. Saturday.
The shooting wounded a 4-year-old girl from Brooklyn, a 23-year-old woman from Rhode Island and a 43-year-old woman from New Jersey. All of them were hospitalized with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said the girl was buying toys with her family at the time, and like the rest of the victims, was a bystander.
Gun violence has steadily been on the rise in New York City.
In response, mayoral candidates are sounding off with Andrew Yang calling for the creation of a new anti-violence unit and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams wants to bring back plainclothes officers who go after guns on the streets.
Last year, the NYPD disbanded its anti-crime unit following protests of police violence.
