NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea on Monday confirmed the department was investigating at least one member who may have participated in last week’s riots at the U.S. Capitol Building.
In an interview with NY1, New York City’s top cop, who was recently diagnosed with COVID-19, said the department has not confirmed the rumors, but there is an ongoing investigation.
“There is one investigation that is active on one member. There is no name yet released because we don't know yet if it's true or not, but I can tell you that anyone committing crimes certainly would have a very short shelf life with the NYPD," Shea told the news station.
He noted that at least 200 NYPD officers are currently heading to Washington, D.C. to provide security for Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday also responded to the rumors of a New York City police officer participating in the riots, saying any city employee who was involved in the riots will “be terminated, period.”
"If we have proof that someone violently attacked our United States government, they will not be working for New York City any longer," the mayor said.
Last week, the MTA suspended a Metro-North employee who they say participated in the violent demonstration.
The FDNY says they are also investigating some members who may have been involved with the insurrectionists.
Officials for the fire department say they have forwarded info to the FBI on members who attended the protest and those who may have been involved in the actual riot.
