YONKERS -- Police in Yonkers on Monday announced the arrests of 14 alleged gang members in connection to a violent assault that was caught on video.
Eleven adults and three minors were arrested or indicted on charges that include felony gang assault and robbery following an attack that left a 33-year-old man with serious injuries, police say.
According to authorities, the attack happened on North Broadway on June 17 during a memorial event for a community member. Police detectives were already in attendance because they say known gang members were there.
Investigators say the victim was followed into a convenience store, where a verbal dispute began. After exiting the store, the victim was followed, struck in the back of the head with a liquor bottle and was struck again from behind.
The detectives witnessed the attack at about 9 p.m., police say, where a large group punched and kicked the victim to the point of unconsciousness, and stole items from him, including two gold chains and a wristwatch.
The victim was brought to a hospital with initially life-threatening injuries, but was stabilized, police say.
Police officers who responded to the scene apprehended five people within minutes of the incident, and the following weeks were devoted to scanning videos of the scene for more possible suspects, according to police.
Thirteen of the 14 people arrested are members of the 300 Bloodhound Brims gang. According to police, the gang was behind the shooting of a 6-year-old in April.
“This was a shockingly brutal attack. These charges demonstrate our commitment to aggressively prosecute all violence, including gang violence, and to seek justice for victims of brutal attacks such as this one,” says Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah.
