Following last week's Democratic Debate, a post on WCCO Radio's Facebook page included accusations of California Senator Kamala Harris both "sleeping her way to the top" and questioning whether or not Harris is "black". As reaction to Harris' debate performance made the rounds on social media, so did seemingly racist attacks against her.
Over the weekend, Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, shared another person’s tweet with his millions of followers during the Democratic debate on Thursday that falsely claimed Senator Kamala Harris was not black enough to be discussing the plight of black Americans. Trump Jr.'s tweet said “Is this true? Wow.” It has since been deleted.
"If you want to go ahead, and challenge her beliefs on size of government, her opinions on Medicare for all, what she did in California as Attorney General, you think she's too far left, you don't like where she stands on taxes, let's have that debate. That's what elections are all about. But literally, we're going to bring this, in 2019, all about race? Just like we did in 2007, 2008, 2009, and further, with Barack Obama. Are people not better than this? You can just debate the issues. We still need to talk about someone's race to those who are bothered by race! And sadly, that number is higher than we want to acknowledge. I think it's just disgusting and pathetic that these tactics are still out there. "
Added Hartman, "If she becomes an even bigger factor in the race, it's going to become an even bigger issue. People need to look in the mirror when this is the route they are going." Some polls have Harris as high as 3rd now, trailing only Biden and Sanders.
“@KamalaHarris doesn’t have s--- to prove,” tweeted Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.)
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee called the attacks “racist and vile.”
Harris has surged behind the strength of her passionate comments on busing, and her confrontation with former Vice President Joe Biden on the debate stage last week. Many outlets, including Fox News, have questioned whether Biden was prepared enough to take on Harris regarding race.
