A man faces second-degree murder charges, nearly three years after the death of a toddler in north Minneapolis.
Chris Welch, 34, of Lexington was charged after investigators say he shot and killed two-year-old LeVonte Jones in the late morning of July 8, 2016.
Jones was in the backseat of his father's car when a gun fight broke out between his father and Welch at the intersection of Penn and Lowry Avenues. Pastor Danny Givens is a friend of LeVonte's family.
"The entire Twin Cities was impacted by this," Givens said. "This wasn't just something things were going to sit back and remain silent. Sometimes the judicial system slows this thing down."
Givens credited the witnesses for their courage in coming forward.
Welch is already in federal prison serving a 17 year sentence on firearms charges. Minneapolis police say he'll be brought back to Minneapolis to face this murder charge.
