It turns out no one was hurt among a group of Girl Scouts who were picked up from an island on Knife Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area early Saturday morning.
Officials with the St. Louis County rescue squad were called when the guide who was with the scout contacted authorities to report a nearby lightning strike.
This follows Girl Scout safety protocol, according to a scout official.
A Girl Scouts spokeswoman said the eight scouts are from Chicago and were following a pre-planned route.
The Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin Lakes and Pines said that all of the girls were back at their canoe base in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on Saturday morning after being checked at a hospital in Ely, which is about 215 miles north of Minneapolis. It said no one was directly struck by lightning, but "they might have experienced ground current."
The St. Louis County Rescue Squad says its members reached the group on a Knife Lake island in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at about 4 a.m.
Officials say the girls were never considered missing.
Early reports that there were injuries led to concern across the state, with Gov. Walz sending out a message that he was monitoring the situation.
