As the legislature convenes Tuesday, many will be remembering one of the more charismatic lawmakers to occupy the state capitol.
Word Monday of the passing of longtime DFL Representative Tom Rukavina, who represented Virginia and the Iron Range for nearly three decades in the Minnesota House.
WCCO political analyst Blois Olson says Rukavina was well liked by members of both parties.
"Rukavina was one of the more colorful characters, well-known for his fun, and pointed speeches on the House floor.
“Representative Rukavina was a giant among legislators. He was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and legendary speeches. Most impressive of all was his dedication to the people of the Iron Range. He spent his career tirelessly defending the hard working men and women of this state. Minnesota is a better place because of him. There will never be another one like him. He was a complete original."
Rukavina died after a battle with leukemia. He was 68.
