(WCCO) The Minneapolis City Council will hold a special emergency meeting on Friday, June, 5, in response to a court order outlining immediate changes for the Minneapolis Police Department.

The City Council will vote on the court order that calls for immediate change and a framework for systematic change inside the MPD in the wake of the death of George Floyd.

Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender took to Twitter to announce they are going to dismantle the MPD.

Yes. We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety. https://t.co/FCfjoPy64k

She then went on to respond to comments on her tweet saying that going through the mayor's office “doesn't matter.”

Doesn’t matter anymore. I think we have the help we need no matter what happens there.

The vote expected Friday is a part of the longer investigation that will be done by the state.

At the meeting, the City Council will be briefed by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights Commissioner Rebecca Lucero and Minneapolis Civil Rights Director Velma Korbel. Lucero and Korbel will explain what will happen next in the state investigation into the MPD.

An investigation of the MPD started on June 2. The Minnesota Department of Human Rights began the investigation after filing a civil rights charge against the MPD related to the death of George Floyd.

The investigation will examine the last 10 years of policies, procedure and practices to determine if the MPD has engaged in systematic discriminatory practices toward people of color. If so, they're tasked with ensuring those practices are halted.

The city council meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be streamed on the City of Minneapolis’ website.
