Emmer expects mid-week briefing on raid that killed Soleimani

Congressman Tom Emmer

Minnesota Sixth District Congressman Tom Emmer is not yet passing judgment on the US military drone attack that killed Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani.

The Republican told WCCO radio that he first must hear all the fact about the attack, and expects to be briefed as early as Wednesday in Washington.

"I'm not going to be like others and rush to judgment, and talk about whether it was right or wrong," Emmer said.

"I have a lot of respect for Secretary of State (Mike) Pompeo," said Emmer. "When he says there was an imminent threat to Americans and American interests, I believe him. Now I want him to show us what that was."

The US House is back in session on Tuesday, with the Senate returning late last week.

"We'll probably hear from the Secretary of Defense, we'll probably hear from the Secretary of State, and perhaps others in the intelligence community," he said. "You're talking about 535 members of the US Congress, they're not going to release it as a headline to everyone when it has sensitive defense information."

Emmer said he wants to know "what was it, and why now" about the drone strike.

"I think everybody agrees this was an appropriate move from a strategic standpoint," said Emmer. "As we get briefed on the details, we'll better be able to respond to those questions."

Emmer called Soleimani a terrorist.
