235 Minnesota drivers were arrested in a 36 hour period between July 4 and 5 for driving while intoxicated, that according to the Office of Traffic Safety.
"This is significantly higher than what we see in a typical weekend," Mike Hanson, the director of the Office of Traffic Safety said.
The arrests follow a busy month of June for Minnesota law enforcement where 2,571 impaired driving arrests were made. It's the highest amount in any month since 2012.
"That tells us the there are a lot of Minnesotans that haven't gotten the message to not drive impaired," Hanson said.
Hanson credits law enforcement for nabbing the impaired drivers and the use of better technology. He says more needs to be done to educate drivers.
"We have a lot more work to convince people how to make better decisions so they don't run into this issue."
Ride sharing services provide an alternative to drinking and driving. However, those services might not be readily available in more rural areas of the state. However, Hanson says it's easy to make arrangements.
"There are enough options out there now where there's really not a lot of excuses to find yourself in the back of a squad car, or worse, because of an impaired driving offense," he said.
