St. Paul Police are investigating what appears to be that city's first homicide of 2019.

Monday night about 8:30 pm, police say a man was dropped off at Regions hospital in a private car. The man died hours later.

Police determined it happened in the south Frogtown neighborhood an alley behind 440 West University Avenue, not far from the State Capitol.

"This area is not without its challenges," said Sgt. Mike Ernster. "The St Paul police department never wants to get a call of a shooting in this area, but we are going to work in our community, and work with businesses and try to determine the best options available to combat these types of crimes."

Investigators were on the scene using a device to take three dimemsional video images.

The name and age of the victim has not been released.

WCCO Reporters Sloane Martin and Susie Jones contributed to this report.
