Laura Oakes' One Cool Thing: MCAD's Annual Art Sale
This week, we take you to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and your opportunity to enjoy some of the art created there.
Q: Hey Laura, what's your One Cool Thing for this weekend?
A: This weekend's pick is, in my opinion, THE art sale of all art sales. It's the Minneapolis College of Art and Design's 22nd annual sale, featuring nearly 7,000 pieces of art from more than 400 student and alumni artists.
Q: Why should people go?
A: It's a fabulous way to support some very talented young people, who are not only creating interesting, beautiful, and provocative art, but also learning some business and communication skills by being heavily involved in this major event for MCAD. They're learning how to price their work and many will be experiencing that awesome feeling of making their very first sale. And, I'm told many artists are introverts, so being involved in the whole process and actually having to talk to people about their work takes some courage, while at the same time can help many of these talented folks come out of their shells a little bit. And the timing for holiday gifts couldn’t be better!
Q: MCAD has a pretty strong reputation as being one of the best art schools in the country. What makes it so?
A: It's pretty competitive in terms of admissions and has the national reputation to prove it. MCAD art, animation and design alums hold some pretty prominent positions at places like Nike, Disney and other major corporations. They own agencies and galleries. The school prides itself on keeping enrollment fairly small, with a 10:1 student/faculty ratio.
Q: What do I need to know to go to the sale?
