A 20-year old Minneapolis man is sentenced to four and a half years in prison for his role in a 2019 fatal carjacking when he was only 15-years old.
The Hennepin County Attorney's Office had originally sought to have Husayn Braveheart sentenced to supervised release in the killing of 39-year old Steven Markey in Northeast Minneapolis, saying he was showing progress and responding to treatment.
The request prompted outrage from Markey's family and the judge denied it, but in the end, did allow Braveheart to plead to a lesser charge, which could have him released as early as next week with credit for time served.
Another teen earlier pled guilty to pulling the trigger and is serving a 21-year sentence. Braveheart admitted firing a gun at Stephen Markey as well, even though it was the other teen that hit him.
Braveheart will be back in court Monday for his alleged involvement in two robbery cases.
“Our job is a difficult one; it is to hold people accountable, protect public safety, and achieve a fair and just result. We believe that we have reached that balance in this case," said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. "We know some will agree and others will not. Mr. Braveheart, a juvenile when he committed this terrible crime, has made enormous strides and been responsive to treatment during the past five years of his incarceration."
