Police shared on Tuesday morning that a 9-year-old Brooklyn Park boy has been hospitalized after being shot in the face by his little brother.
It happened last night in a home on the 7500 block of Fremont Avenue North. Police say the victim’s 7-year-old brother had been handling a handgun when it discharged.
Brooklyn Park Police Inspector Elliot Faust shared that the shooting was a tragedy.
“There are laws in place to safeguard against this, and so that begs the question of, 'Why did this happen?'” Faust said. “There’s a lot that we’re still looking into. Clearly, there were some missteps that caused this tragedy.”
Unfortunately, Faust says this isn’t the first time this has happened in Brooklyn Park, as last year, in a similar case, a child died.
Faust says anyone keeping a gun in the home is required to store it in a place where it can’t be accessed by children and must store it away from ammunition. The boy who was shot is in stable condition.
