The mother of 19-year-old Johntae Hudson filed a wrongful death complaint in Hennepin county seeking over $50,000 in damages, claiming inadequate security allowed armed individuals to enter despite prior violent incidents.
On December 23rd 2022, a fatal shooting occurred inside the Nordstrom store at the Mall of America during a busy Christmas shopping weekend.
An altercation broke out when a group of attackers blocked 19-year-old Johntae Hudson from following his friends up an escalator.
Hudson was tackled to the ground and shot multiple times at point-blank range by multiple gunmen using firearms equipped with extended ammunition magazines.
The incident triggered immediate chaos and forced the entire shopping center into a temporary lockdown.
Although two teenagers were previously sentenced to 30 years for second-degree murder following the fatal confrontation, the new legal filing argues that security failed to act on a 911 call reporting a gunman nearly 30 minutes before the attack.
The court will now review the allegations to determine whether the mall is liable for Hudson's death.
