After 32 years, it's the end of an era today for a downtown Minneapolis institution.
They came for the farmer's omelet with the hashbrowns on the inside. Or maybe the made-from-scratch hot commercial sandwich and a slice of homemade Dutch apple pie. Or perhaps just a cup of coffee in a really cool, art deco space within the historic Foshay Tower.
No matter what the occasion, Keys Café will be missed.
"I love the meat lover's omelet, I've had work meetings here," said one customer. "It's just been a convenient place to come with great food and great service and just a great place to be. It's a Minneapolis staple in my mind."
"It's really cool that it's such a historical building in downtown. We moved to Saint Paul now, but we came back for the last day," said another customer.
Keys Café and Bakery downtown is one of several Keys restaurants owned and operated by the children and grandchildren of original owner, Barbara Hunn.
Some customers were concerned about another business closing its doors, and leaving people unemployed.
"I'm hoping that especially in these times, that the servers have employment opportunities after this, and places to go, and ways to support their families and stuff," said a diner.
Still - it was always the food that brought them in.
"We come especially for the farmer's omelet though. It's the only Keys that we have with the hashbrowns on the inside."
No reason was given for the closure. Seven other Keys Café locations remain open.
