St. Paul Police are announcing an arrest in Wednesday’s arson at a mosque on Dale Street. They say 42-year old Said Ntamugabumwe has been booked in the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of first degree arson.
The investigation is ongoing according to police.
The fire at the Tawhid Islamic Center of Minnesota was the sixth mosque fire in Minnesota so far this year. It was undergoing remodeling and there was nobody inside at the time of the fire.
Executive Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations Jaylani Hussein says thankfully nobody was hurt but he is concerned that so many mosques in Minnesota have been attacked.
“That’s the most in the country,” said Hussein. “The majority of the attacks against mosques in America is happening in our state.”
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter added that this is a major concern in the Twin Cities.
“I’m disgusted, to have to stand in front of some cameras, stand in front of some microphones, and again tell you what I think about an arson at a mosque,” said Carter. “An arson at a mosque, an arson at a place of worship.”
