On Wednesday, a suspect was arrested in connection with the May 2021 shooting of 9-year-old Trinity Ottoson-Smith, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
The Minnesota BCA announced the arrest of D'Pree Shareef Robinson, 19, who has been booked into Hennepin County Jail on probable cause second-degree murder.
Ottoson-Smith was shot and injured last May while jumping on a trampoline in the backyard of her friend's north Minneapolis home.
After the shooting, she was in critical care for 12 days at North Memorial hospital before succumbing to her injuries.
The Minnesota BCA shared that it compiled information involving the shooting, which led to the arrest of Robinson.
In a press release, the agency shared that it believes Ottoson-Smith's death was unintended and caused by gang-related drive-by shootings.
Robinson was taken into custody for the alleged murder of Ottoson-Smith at approximately noon today at his Minneapolis home without any incident, the release said.
Ottoson-Smith was just one of several children killed in shootings in Minneapolis last summer, and BCA superintendent Drew Evans touched on this in the release.
"As we said during the Spotlight on Crime news conference last August, families deserve to know who did this to their children," Evans said in the release. "We have worked diligently to achieve justice for Trinity and her family. This is the first step toward achieving that justice."
The investigation is still ongoing at this point, and Robinson is expected to appear in Hennepin County District Court later this week.
