Debris was thrown, a fence was breached, and fireworks lit up the sky over Brooklyn Center late Monday into Tuesday when demonstrators defied a 7:00 p.m. curfew and clashed with officers outside the Brooklyn Center police station.
It was the second straight night protesters massed outside the building in reaction to the death of Daunte Wright, who was shot by Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter during a traffic stop on Sunday.
In an early-morning news conference, Minnesota State Patrol Colonel Matt Langer said officers were ready to respond.
"The troopers, deputies, conservation officers stood and protected that building courageously and bravely, and were shelled pretty significantly with objects by the crowd," he said.
Some of those arrested remain in custody.
"We just want to say 'thank you' for all the people that came out and exercised their first amendment right in a peaceful manner," said Minnesota Public Safety Assistant Commissioner Booker Hodges. "Unfortunately, there were those that decided not to do that."
Arrests were also made following limited looting in both Brookyln Center and Minneapolis.
"A long night, but I think we maintained as much order as we could," said Hennepin County sheriff Dave Hutchinson.
Authorities say they'll have a strong police presence around the Brooklyn Center police station again Tuesday night.
"Hopefully, (Tuesday) is nice and relaxed, and people remain law-abiding," said Hutchinson.
