Police in Brooklyn Park are asking the public's tracking down an armed sexual assailant who attacked a woman Wednesday afternoon.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. off a public walkway around the 7400 block of Unity Avenue.  Spokesman Elliot Faust says this type of crime is extremely rare.

"It was a stranger perpetrator, extremely rare, I don't think we've had an incident like this occur this year," says Faust. "It does happen from time-to-time anywhere, but it is extremely rare, thankfully. It's about one of the most frightening things that could happen."

Police say a woman was walking on a path when she was assaulted at gunpoint. Faust says they have yet to locate the suspect.

"The suspect was described by involved parties as being a dark-skinned African American male, approximately mid-20s in age," Faust explains. "His physical description was 5 foot 6 inches with a skinny build."

Witnesses said he was dressed in all black clothing with mid-length hair and a small mustache. The incident remains under investigation.
