Two men are charged by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in a weekend shooting of a Minneapolis Police Officer.
19-year old Frederick Leon Davis is charged with attempted second-degree murder and 20-year old Nevaeh Lee Page is charged with aiding an offender after the fact.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty made the announcement Tuesday and noted that the investigation is still ongoing.
The charges stem from the shooting of a plain-clothed Minneapolis Police Department officer driving an unmarked vehicle on August 11.
The officer who is not named is expected to recover. He is a seven-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department and assigned to the fourth precinct.
“We experienced a disturbing level of gun violence over the weekend,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “The danger that comes with all gun violence is intensified when firearms are modified to make them fully automatic, as occurred in this attack. Our office will continue to prioritize prosecution of this type of violence, to bring justice for victims and their families, and to get these dangerous weapons off the street.”
The two charged individuals will make their first court appearances Wednesday afternoon.
"I am grateful the injured officer is on the road to recovery,” says Moriarty. “As we begin the prosecution of these two individuals we will continue to work closely with law enforcement on the investigation to ensure all involved are held accountable."
The shooting happened at 9:16 p.m. in the 4300 block of Colfax Avenue on the north side. The officer reportedly was in an unmarked car following a vehicle that reportedly was stolen and had been involved in a robbery near 36th and Queen Avenue. That car reportedly had been driven away and avoided Brooklyn Park police earlier in the week.
Police say 14 rounds were discharged from the car that officers were following. Authorities have said it is possible the suspects didn’t know they were shooting at a police officer.
