The housing market is hot right now for any home, but combine a historical connection to a great property, and the price is sure to skyrocket. That's precisely what happened for the 1,400-square-foot condo at the birthplace of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
On the 400 block of Laurel Avenue in St. Paul, the author responsible for writing "The Great Gatsby" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" was born in 1896.
A plaque sits on the west side of the building, letting visitors know that they are at the birthplace of Fitzgerald, where he lived until he was 2. Now, one of the converted condo units inside the brick-and-stone Victorian building is on the market for $350,000.
The condo includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, a formal dining room, a fireplace, and its original woodwork.
The owner, Charlie Brokaw, said that anyone who lives in the condo would appreciate the storied past of the building, the Star Tribune reported.
"I just love the historical nature of it," he said to the Tribune.
The property's listing agent, Joyce Peterson, shared that the building matches the other ones it is surrounded by on Ramsey Hill.
"This is a charming building, and the streets here in Ramsey Hill are so architecturally beautiful," Peterson said to the Tribune. "The association carefully maintains this St. Paul treasure."
Brokaw shared that the condo association takes care of the property and that he has had to do little work over the four years he has lived there.
"With any other home that I've had, I almost immediately start to remodel it," he said to the Tribune. "Here, I just painted. That's about it."
The Minnesota Historical Society has three different Fitzgerald landmarks listed in the area. Barkow shared with the Tribune that when people ask him about living there, he has no problem telling them where Fitzgerald once lived.
"It's one of the reasons I liked living in the building," Brokaw said. "It's an important part of history."
