A doggy daycare center stepping up in the wake of the Helix apartment fire in St. Louis Park

Many residents of the Helix apartment complex are clients at the Pampered Pooch Playground, so it only makes sense that they would help in this time of need.

"Their apartment complex is really close to our facility, so we wanted to help out," says Caroline Cashman, assistant general manager there. "Also just because our community is strong, we just basically decided that we would start taking donations."

They're accepting everything from human and pet food, litter, toys, treats, you name it. But no cash.

"Our customers always like do a really great job of like being generous whenever we do host fundraisers, but we have been overwhelmed by the amount of wonderful donations that we've gotten," she adds.

The fire started last Friday afternoon and tore though the building destroying 90 units. There are more than 160 units in the large S-shaped complex.

"One of our clients did have to board his dog for a while," Cashman explains. "His apartment was pretty severely damaged, and he says that it's been really difficult. A horrible experience, obviously, but he says that there's been a lot of support and that he's had a lot of success finding solace in the community. And also, you know, getting donations and stuff like that."
