Unexpectedly high demand has overwhelmed the state-run website for a new e-bike rebate program. Now they're postponing sign-ups.

The site offering rebates of up to $1,500 went live at 11:00 Wednesday morning, and crashed shortly after takeoff.

State revenue department officials tell WCCO Radio that they're working on a fix and apologize for the inconvenience.

"The online application for individuals to apply for an e-Bike Rebate Certificate is experiencing technical issues," said the Department of Revenue. "Due to these issues, the application will not be available today, June 5, 2024. We are working with our external technology vendors engaged for this program to understand and fix the technical issues on the site."

Freewheel Bike Shops owner Kevin Ishaug told WCCO's Jason DeRusha the popularity of electric bikes is going through the roof, in part because they've been a gamechanger for commuters.

"It's amazing how many bikes or how many trips you could substitute a bicycle for a car, or mass transit," says Ishaug. "And it's fun, right? It's not as much fun riding a bus. But getting on a bicycle, it's the ultimate freedom. And you just put that on the next level with the electric assist."

Ishaug said the popularity of electric bikes has really taken off in the past couple of years, largely due to their versatility.

"You know, it's everybody from mountain bikers to city bike riders, to people who like to go out and explore the country in that back country with the bike backpacking," Ishaug says. "So it does kind of lend itself to every aspect of the cycling community."

Those who qualify for the rebate must purchase their bike from one of 190 eligible retailers in the state.

There's still no word on when the rebate website will be restored.
