As the holiday season begins, the "What’s My Why" DWI enforcement campaign is activating extra patrols across Minnesota.

During the campaign, law enforcement officials across the state will share their “why” for getting impaired drivers off the road.

Chisago County Deputy Kyle Puelston says a drunk driver changed his life after he was struck on duty.

"She provided a preliminary breath test on the road and gave a reading of 0.27, over three times the legal limit," says Puelston. "I remember just this intense, sharp headache setting in by Monday morning. The headache transitioned into head pressure and then was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury."

Minnesota State Patrol chief Matt Langer says there is always an alterative to driving impaired.

"There's no excuse for planning a sober ride, or a ride-sharing service, or public transportation or not driving at all," says Langer. "The options are plentiful."

The campaign is set to run though the end of the year.
