There was an out-of-character endorsement this morning in the Minnesota Governor's race.
Independent former Governor Jesse Ventura, who has rarely endorses a candidate of either of the major political parties since leaving office, has thrown his support behind Governor Tim Walz.
“As an independent statesman, I don’t believe in the major political parties,” the former Governor says in a video. “Since leaving office, I’ve rarely endorsed a candidate for office in Minnesota – of any political persuasion. But this election is too important. That’s why I’m endorsing Governor Tim Walz for reelection.”
In the almost two minute video put out by the Walz campaign, Ventura cites women's rights, the January 6th insurrection, and the handling of the pandemic as some of the reasons he has put his support behind the incumbent Democrat Walz.
“Tim has shown through the last few years how important strong leadership is for our state,” says Ventura. “When COVID-19 hit, Tim was there to keep our state safe. That’s the governor’s most important job.”
Ventura has been frequently critical of both the Democratic and Republican two-party system, and as recently as 2020 vocally supported Green Party candidates.
With less than two weeks to go before Election Day, Republican Dr. Scott Jensen received the endorsement of ex-president Donald Trump on a social media post on Tuesday.
“Minnesota finally has a chance to have a great Governor,” former President Trump said. “His name is Dr. Scott Jensen, the Republican Gubernatorial Candidate, and he will bring Minnesota back from the brink. Strong on both fighting Crime and delivering Solid and Sensible Education, the results will be quickly seen - and there won’t be any more fiery takeovers of police precincts. Minnesota will be Great Again. Dr. Scott Jensen has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Current polls show a relatively tight race for Governor with Walz holding a slight lead, a lead which has been narrowed since August.
