Last week, the University of Minnesota parted-ways with both the men's and women's head hockey coaches. This week, they've announced both replacements after St. Cloud State head coach Brett Larson agreed to take the job as the new men's hockey coach.

Larson played prep hockey at Duluth Denfeld before a four-year career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, followed by 12 years of professional hockey.

"I am excited for Brett to lead our men's hockey program and look forward to welcoming him, his wife Kelly, and their children, Lane and Calla, to Minnesota," said Coyle. "Brett brings extensive coaching experience at both the collegiate and international levels, and throughout the process, it became clear that he possesses the leadership, vision, and drive to guide our program. He understands the responsibility that comes with this job and our expectation to compete at the highest level."

He's been coaching since 1999, and he got the St. Cloud State job in 2018 when Bob Motzko was hired away by the Gophers.

Motzko left after eight seasons at Minnesota.

St. Cloud State won 153 games under Larson which ranks as the fourth-most in program history.

Gophers also name a new women's hockey coach

Director of Athletics Mark Coyle introduced Greg "Boom" May as the third head coach in the history of Gopher Women's Hockey on Monday afternoon. He'll replace Brad Frost, who was the Gopher coach for 19 seasons and won four national championships.

The University and May have agreed to a four-year term, pending the completion of a background check and Board of Regents approval.

"Boom is a relationship-builder and a strong recruiter who brings success as a head coach to our program," said Coyle. "He knows Minnesota hockey, but he has also coached and had success at the international level. Our program is in good hands with Greg at the helm. I am excited for the future of the program, and I am excited for Greg, his wife, Lenia, and their two daughters Marina and Cole."

May has been the Associate Head Coach for the Minnesota women's team since 2023. He also coached the men's hockey team at Augsburg University for two seasons to a 41-15-2 record and two NCAA tournament berths from 2021-23 and was the director of operations for the Minnesota men's team from 2019-21.
