A federal grand jury has reportedly been empaneled to look into the killing of three first responders in Burnsville.

Shannon Gooden shot and killed two police officers and a firefighter-paramedic before killing himself during the hours-long standoff last month.

Twin Cities'-based attorney and former WCCO Radio host Jack Rice says they're trying to find the person who got Gooden the guns and charge them with murder.

"If a crime couldn't have happened, but for the behavior of an individual, then shouldn't that individual have to pay some price for it? And that's what the feds are trying to determine right now," Rice explains.

He adds this is a serious situation for anyone who helped Gooden attain weapons.

"They're trying to take one horrible example, one horrible incident that took the lives of two police officers and an EMT, and to take that example to reach up and to grab for some of those others who helped make it happen," says Rice. "Even if they didn't know what the outcome was going to be."

In addition to taking testimony, the grand jury has ordered a gun store owner to provide documents about the purchase of an AR-15 that is believed to have been the one that the Gooden used in the killings.

WCCO-TV is reporting that the mother of three of Gooden's children says she testified yesterday about her relationship with Gooden, but most of the questions asked by prosecutors dealt with where he obtained his guns.

She says they also asked about his prior criminal history including a conviction in 2007 which led to a lifetime ban from possessing firearms.

By law, grand juries are secret, but witnesses can speak about their testimony if they choose.
