A man is dead after trying to intervene when the driver of a car involved in a north Minneapolis crash tried to flee the scene.

The incident happened this morning at the intersection of Broadway and Lyndale Avenue in North Minneapolis, where police say the driver shot the man, who was running after him. Minneapolis Police spokesperson Officer Garrett Parten says what happened today should never happen.

"You know, I have an innocent bystander who wants to do the right thing and believes running away from an accident is the wrong thing to do. He interjects and we have a tragic outcome. It's just absolutely horrible what happened."

Parten says the suspect was eventually subdued in a nearby Cub Foods parking lot by members of a crime prevention community group after trying to carjack a woman on her way to a Salvation Army press conference. Police took him to a hospital and then to jail. The name of the victim has not been released.

The victims of the crash were taken to the hospital but none of their injuries are life threatening.
