The schools involved in last week's shooting outside a high school football game are taking extra precautions this week.
In Bloomington, only students and their family members will be allowed to attend the Saturday homecoming football game at Kennedy High School. All students will be required to show a student ID and any non-high school students will need a parent chaperone.
Rick Kaufman who is the Bloomington Public School’s Executive Director of Community Relations and Emergency Management, tells WCCO that they are making sure there is not a repeat this week or beyond.
“I think we’re all in a high sense of awareness and concern, and many of us are putting in security measures,” Kaufman said. “Continuing to show safety and well-being to our students and staff members, as well as parents and families that want to enjoy these activities and athletic events.”
There will be an increased security presence inside and outside the stadium. The school will reassess after the game on its security plans moving forward.
Richfield high school will require all students to register online before attending Friday's varsity football game at Minneapolis Washburn and they must present a student ID upon entrance.
Bloomington Kennedy, which traveled to Richfield last week, will not require pre-registration but is only allowing students and their families to attend the Saturday game. Students younger than high school students will be required to have a parent chaperone.
Kaufman explains they are concerned there could be some sort of retaliation after last week’s shooting.
“This is an ongoing situation because of the concerns for any retaliatory disputes,” Kaufman says.
Because of that, there will be increased police presence both in and outside of their stadium. For now, it's a one-week change.
“We will reassess after the game, whether these additional security measures will be in place for future football games this season,” explains Kaufman.
