It took four hours for a Hennepin County jury to find 25-year-old Jawan Carroll guilty of murdering two people in a shooting outside Monarch Nightclub in downtown Minneapolis last spring.

Carroll took the stand this week to say he acted in self-defense, blaming his rivals for starting the trouble that resulted in the death of two.

Carroll's mother, Constance Taylor, spoke with News Talk 830 WCCO's Susie Jones after the verdict was read.

"I don't feel that was a fair trial. I feel that was racist because of the college student," Taylor said. "Had the college student had not got hurt, they would not have found my son guilty because there is no way they don't see that was self-defense. That could have been him dead."

Carroll killed 24-year-old Christopher Jones of Brooklyn Park and 21-year-old Charlie B Johnson of Golden Valley, who was a student at the University of St. Thomas set to graduate the next day.

Sentencing for Carroll was scheduled for Dec. 12, 2022.
