Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter will serve the “supervised release” portion of her sentence in Wisconsin after being released from the state women’s correctional facility in Shakopee early this morning.
Potter was convicted in the killing of 20-year-old Daunte Wright after she mistakenly grabbed her handgun instead of her taser in 2021.
Twin Cities defense attorney Joe Friedberg, who is not associated with the case, spoke with News Talk 830 WCCO’s Chad Hartman about the release.
Friedberg has been following the former officer’s case since before she was arrested, and he says it will be interesting to see what the future holds for her.
“She’s going to have a new life. She’s going to have a new career of some kind,” Friedberg said. “I don’t doubt that there are many people waiting to offer her employment since a very large part of the public felt that she was wrongfully convicted in the first place.”
Potter will remain on supervised release until the end of this year.
