The Labor Day travel holiday represents the last big weeknd for air travel, despite fears among many passengers nationwide about delays brought on by airline staffing shortages as the pandemic has worn on.

“I think the airlines do a really good job of reaching out to their passengers and their customers with any changes,” said MSP spokesperson Jeff Lea on Friday. “I think the key thing is to be flexible.”

Lea said passengers should always keep handy any contact information to reach out to airlines with questions or for updates. He also said MSP doesn’t always see the same delays that many airports with connecting flights to Minneapolis see this time of year.

“Other airports may be busier,” Lea said.

Lea said, overall, MSP numbers show a busy summer, though still well short of pre-pandemic numbers.

Lea said in 2019 the airport averaged 40-45,000 passengers a day. He said on the peak days in 2022 so far (Spring Break time in March and then the busiest days in July or August this summer), the airport saw a few days approaching 40,000 passengers.
