Family members read letters from Trinity Ottoson-Smith’s friends at the sentencing of her killer on Tuesday, more than two years after she was killed in a friend's backyard in North Minneapolis.
In May of 2021, the 9-year-old North Minneapolis girl was jumping on a trampoline when she was hit in the head by 20-year-old Dpree Robinson’s bullet, which investigators say was intended for a rival gang member.
A Hennepin County judge sentenced Robinson to 37½ years in prison for the murder of Ottoson-Smith.
Raishawan Smith, Ottoson-Smith’s father, spoke after the sentencing on Tuesday.
“What a blessing I have the opportunity to bring justice for my daughter,” Smith said. “But this is only one case. There’s so many more kids that need this. So many more families that need this.
The families of LaDavionne Garrett Jr. and Aniya Allen, two other children shot within a few weeks of Ottoson-Smith, attended the sentencing.
“One down, two to go. We coming. Sooner or later, we going to be here too,” Garrett’s grandmother said. “We going to get justice too.”
