Law enforcement said a man is in stable condition after a stabbing at a Metro Transit light rail station early Friday morning.
Around 1:00 a.m., Metro Transit Police responded to a report of a stabbing at the Nicollet Mall station in downtown Minneapolis, according to a spokesperson for the department.
The Metro Transit Police Department said the man who was stabbed was brought to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and reported to be in stable condition.
Metro Transit police are still searching for suspects and more information relating to the incident.
There have been ongoing issues with safety at light rail transit stations, especially the Lake Street and Franklin Avenue stops. Jason Chavez, who represents the city's Ninth Ward in the City Council, has asked for action after he witnessed a shooting at about 10:30 p.m. at Lake Street/Midtown Station.
Metro Transit Police Chief Ernest Morales III told WCCO’s Jason DeRusha earlier this week safety on the trains is a major focus for the department.
“We need to take control of this problem, a societal problem, that is existing,” says Morales. “We need to collaborate and work together to address these issues.”
Morales is hoping more people will return back to the transit system which he says will “flush out” the criminal aspect. Morales adds they plan to make officers more visible on trains and at stations.
