Minneapolis city leaders are honoring 911 dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
More than 600,000 calls are routed through Minneapolis' dispatch each year and it's a job Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says deserves more recognition.
"The incredible people that we have doing 911 dispatch led by Joni Hodne, they are unbelievable," Frey says. "They help make sure our city is a safer place."
The next three days are dedicated to recognizing and honoring the dispatchers, and in Minneapolis that means answering more than 600 thousand calls a year.
Frey says it also marks another milestone for the office.
"Our 911 dispatchers and everybody that's doing this work, they are incredible, and we are presently at full staffing for the first time since 2020," declared Frey.
The celebration comes just days after the city announced that dispatch chatter will no longer available to the public which Frey says was ultimately the right decision.
"This stems from recommendations coming from the state, from the BCA, both to improve safety and also to just comply with the law," he said.
