Despite this past week’s storm not quite living up to the early predictions of 20 or more inches, the City of Minneapolis has declared a one day snow emergency.
That means Friday night beginning at 9:00, parking will be prohibited on all Snow Emergency Routes until 8:00 Saturday morning, or until the road is cleared to the curb.
After 8:00 Saturday morning, a parking ban will again be in place on even sides of non-snow emergency routes.
The extra Snow Emergency is to allow city plow drivers to better plow the full width of the street which has been a significant issue so far this winter. With another foot or so of fresh snow added this week (officially 13.1 inches at MSP Airport), much of central Minnesota in and around the Twin Cities have seen 70-plus inches this season, making it the 17th snowiest on record with plenty of time to add to it.
If you’re scoring at home, this week’s storm was the 23rd biggest in Minnesota’s recorded weather history, so it was definitely significant even if it wasn’t Halloween of 1991.
WCCO’s Chief Meteorologist Paul Douglas says more is on the way too. He says an inch of fresh powder will hit the Twin Cities Friday night. Douglas also says watch out for Monday into Tuesday, where some freezing rain could change into 2-3 inches of snow. At least highs should be in the 30s most of next week as we hit March (finally).
