Nearly all of the incumbent Minneapolis City Council members won reelection on Tuesday with Council President Andrea Jenkins (Ward 8) holding off a stiff challenge by Soren Stevenson. The city has also said Wednesday that incumbent Jamal Osman wins in City Council Ward 6. It was in Ward 7 and Ward 12 that new, and more progressive, councilmembers defeated incumbents.
Jenkins was locked in a tight race with Soren Stevenson, who held a 103 vote lead after the first ballot. But Jenkins made up ground by the final ballot using Minneapolis' ranked choice voting to win by a mere 38 votes (48.3% to 47.8%).
Ward 7 in Minneapolis was left vacant by retiring City Council Member Lisa Goodman. In that race, Katie Cashman did defeat Scott Graham (50.8% to 48.5%).
Aurin Chowdhury won in Ward 12 that was formerly represented by Andrew Johnson. Chowdhury captured 53.8% of the vote, with Luther Ranheim finishing a distant second (36.5%).
