Friday marks 25 years since 9/11, the tragic and unforgettable terrorist attack on the U.S. that led to a years-long conflict in the Middle East, and killed nearly 3,000 Americans.
In Minnesota, there are a number of things planned to commemorate the day.
Here's a partial list:
Twins Salute to Service
The Twins and Cleveland Guardians will join Major League Baseball in commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Pregame ceremonies at Target Field will honor those we lost that tragic day and since, salute the heroism of all who sacrificed their own lives to save others, and celebrate those who continue bravely serving our communities and our country.
Pre- and in-game ceremonies are scheduled to include:
- Six wreaths, each representing a different group and commemorating lives lost, will be placed behind the pitcher’s mound pregame, then moved to the flag poles near Gate 34 for the game. The wreaths will honor a number of Minnesota active and retired military members.
- The American flag will be raised in honor of those lost during the 9/11 attacks and in the war on terror.
- A flyover by a Lockheed C-130H3 aircraft operated by the St. Paul-based Minnesota Air National Guard’s 109thAirlift Squadron/133rd Airlift Wing.
- “God Bless America” will be performed during the seventh-inning stretch by Sergeant Nathaniel Olson, a vocalist and trumpeter for the 204th Army Reserve Band out of Vancouver, Washington and Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
There will be a remembrance event at MSP on Friday. At 7:46 a.m., the TSA will pause operations momentarily at all checkpoints. Honor Guard will be present at Terminal 1 North Rotunda (post security).
Taps will play through airport speakers for approximately 90 seconds for travelers, employees and visitors to join in the remembrance of 9/11. Upon its conclusion, checkpoint operations will resume.
Stair Climbing events honor 9/11 first responders
The Minnesota Firefighter Initiative is hosting their first ever Minnesota 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at TCO Stadium in Eagan. Get more information here.
The St Paul Fire Department is also hosting a memorial stair climb at the Saint Paul Science Museum outdoor stairs.
